Benaraby 5/04/08

Here are just a few shots from Nitro Freak's outing at Benaraby, near Gladstone. Although we couldn't get full traction, we were able to put on a bit of flame and noise for people who had never seen nitro funny car before.

Thanks for having us! It was a great weekend.

Kwinana match race 15/03/08

March 15 could be best summed up as almost perfect and almost a disaster.

The first pairing saw a good even start but Rick's car put a cylinder out early, which doesn't do wonders for the engine balance, and broke the blower belt around half track.

Ash had his hands full with a cylinder out at around 330 ft, pushing him right and very close to the wall before lifting and coasting to a 5.60.

Round 2 was supposed to see all the bugs out of the system. Both cars were quick to the 330 ft mark but Nitro Freak dropped an intake valve (our first ever) which often leads to lifted blowers and fires. Luck was on our side as we avoided that, but as the cylinder was out it moved to the right and got the wall with the headers.

Ash felt the power go away and lifted, which was later tracked down to 4 broken blower studs and a pushed out gasket.

Round 3 and we were looking for a good result to send everyone home happy. An oil leak at the end of the burnout for Rick however would see Ash solo. Rocketing to 3.55 sec to half track was easily going to see the car into the 5.2 sec zone, but the blower belt departed at 3.6 seconds and he coasted to a 5.87.

A little more luck next time will redeem our pride - and stay tuned for a big announcement of up and coming events!

Thanks again to all out Perth support people; Rob and Deb Hart, Justin Appleby and Mark Rothwell.

Kwinana match race 29/12/07

With the reduction to just 2 cars once more, the pressure to perform was as strong as ever.

The first pairing netted 2 unforseen dramas which would require some maintenance that would test the crews. The Chemical Warfare car had a fuel line fitting blow apart at 500 ft, leaning out the engine and getting the burst panel out of the manifold with a flash of flames, toasting some air lines to the fuel / clutch management. The newly named Nitro Freak car stripped the crown wheel just past half track, resulting in a favour from former fc racer Graham Jones lending some spares.

A lengthy repair resulted in a solo from Ashley and a 5.374, beating Romeo Capatanio's 5.376 from 14 years earlier.

No real carnage other than the left hand header had both cars just making the curfew for the final. At half track Ashley started to build a lead, but this time the right header let go. Seeing the sparks he aborted the run, coasting to a 5.72 behind Ricky's 5.57. Ricky didn't have it all his own way either. The new back end being not quite right started to get very tight from half track, still hitting the finish line at 258 mph but slowing the car considerably. So much in fact that the car came to a stop 300m past the finish line with the back end completely locked up.

All in all, we were content with the result. Next time out will be March 13 at the Motorplex with hopefully a larger field.

Testing at Willowbank 01/12/07

Ricky Steffens' licence is all signed off now and ready to go. He will be racing in Perth on the 29th of December, along with Ashley Bailey in Chemical Warfare.

Testing at Willowbank Bracket Attack 27/10/07

It was agreed by all that our last test date was a moderate success and progress was in a forward direction. With the debut of our new body wheeled by Ricky Steffens, it closes a long era on our faithful but battle scarred Probe.

After having our licensing requirements complicated by officials, we were instructed that Ricky would still require a further 2 half passes. Picture perfect is how that unfolded, running 3.6 sec to half track on both occasions, equating to somewhere in the 5.3 sec zone for the full quarter.

On our last attempt for the night and first attempt at a full pass, the car dropped a cylinder and veered right, crossing the centre line at half track.

Our Camaro now in black was wheeled out for a half pass to test the new compression heights, doing OK with a cylinder out on the step of the throttle still producing a 3.7 sec half track time. Content with that and good data collected, the 29th of Dec at the Motorplex is looking good.

Ricky Steffens begins licensing 4/8/07

5.71 sec pass with 230 mph at half track and 174 mph at the top end

A successful first stage of licensing. We are unsure when we can complete the process; currently waiting for the new Pontiac body to arrive from the U.S.

When asked if it felt fast off the line, Ricky said it felt fast everywhere!

There was a little wall tag with the left headers, but this only resulted in minor damage.
